John Allan: A Man of original Ideas

We produced this publication in collaboration with Stirling Local History Society and Stirling Council and it’s available to download here from our website, or it can be purchased from The Stirling Smith Art Gallery & Museum’s shop. The booklet celebrates the life and work of one of Stirling’s leading architects, John Allan (1847-1922). Originally from Fife, Allan moved to Stirling in 1870 to set up his architectural practice, and over the course of his career he designed some of Stirling’s most striking buildings, including the Wolf Craig and 55 Baker Street. Passionate about history and housing reform, John Allan was a remarkable man with a remarkable architectural legacy.

King Street: A Place of Quality

Available to download from our website or collect from The Stirling Smith Art Gallery & Museum, this booklet sheds light on King Street’s fascinating history, highlighting key buildings and their stories. It will make you look at this street in the heart of the city centre in a new light. For example, did you know that the Golden Lion Hotel is the oldest building on the street? Built by Stirling architect and mason Gideon Grey (d.1791), it was originally named the Wingate Inn after its owner James Wingate.

20 Great Buildings of Stirling

Produced in collaboration with The Stirling Smith Art Gallery & Museum this booklet invites readers to explore Stirling from the comfort of their own homes. It was designed to be accessible, particularly for those with dementia, and can be enjoyed on your on or with someone else. We have supplied a few questions per building which you can think about or discuss with others. So far copies of 20 Great Buildings have made their way into every Stirling Library branch, and they have also been given to care homes across Stirlingshire for their residents to enjoy. If you would like to request copies of the booklet please get in touch here.
