John Allan Celebration

John Allan Exhibition

In 2017 the Trust worked in partnership with other local organisations including the Stirling Local History Society and the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum to celebrate the life and work of architect John Allan.

He designed over 30 buildings in Stirling between 1871 and 1913 many of which survive today. An author, historian and architect, he leaves a legacy of fascinating buildings which we can all enjoy today, reflecting his interests in antiquities, history, symbolism and religion, and his passion for social reform.

As part of the exhibition, SCHT appointed artist Iona Leishman to work with pupils from Allan’s Primary School to prepare artworks of several John Allan buildings. Photographer, Jo Cound, was also commissioned to take photographs of particular buildings to demonstrate the variety of architecture and details.

John Allan A Man Of Original Ideas

A John Allan Leaflet, funded by SCHT, was prepared by Stirling Local History Society to provide insight into the life and work of John Allan. A book has also been published with support from the Trust, John Allan A Man Of Original Ideas and is available from the Stirling Smith or by contacting SCHT.

100 years of John Allan

John Allan died on 21 February 1922 and to mark 100 years since he died, we have created an online exhibition featuring materials from a previous exhibition held at the Stirling Smith.
